Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he enjoyed participating in various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and fail to win most times. He made some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He judged he could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus even more on the game.

The definite improvement in his game began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often play against one another. Howard was able to access some of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his logical thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL holdem.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena has ever seen. He moved to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
