He earned some additional money by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he possibly could better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.

The definite improvement in his game happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would frequently play against one another. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
