Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed taking part in different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved to New York to participate in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were tough as he played extensive hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he might boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and concentrate even more on poker.

The real advancement in his abilities began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would often challenge one another. Howard was able to access several of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would tweak his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker arena ever. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
