Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he loved participating in different card games at a young age. He found himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little bit and moved to New York to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were tough as he played many hours and don’t win most times. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate even more on poker.

The real advancement in his game began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would regularly challenge one another. He was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, he would tweak his logical thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL holdem.

He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
